Capitec Funeral Cover: From R25 a Month on the App and What to Check

An independent guide to Capitec's funeral plan: cover up to R100,000 for 22 lives, app pricing from R25 a month, and what to check before buying in-app.

By FuneralCosts Editorial · Updated 8 August 2026 · 6 min read

Capitec turned funeral cover into an app product: quoted, bought, edited and claimed from the same banking app millions of South Africans already open every day. That distribution is why it has become one of the most-searched funeral products in the country. Here is what you are actually buying.

FuneralCosts is independent and has no affiliation with Capitec. Facts come from Capitec's published information as checked in July 2026; Capitec's site could not always be verified word-for-word, so confirm current terms in the app or a branch before buying. This is general information, not financial advice.

What genuinely stands out

  • The app is the product. Quotes, cover changes, adding and removing lives, and claims all happen in the Capitec app, and the app channel is priced cheaper than the branch. For a product whose most common failure is quiet lapsing, having the policy inside the app you check daily is a real advantage.
  • The R100,000 ceiling. Capitec's headline maximum matches the regulatory cap that applies to the funeral class of insurance, and is higher than the R50,000 ceilings at several established insurers.
  • Double accidental benefit from day one, per Capitec's published information.
  • Switching credit. Capitec's policy information recognises waiting periods already served with a previous insurer, which the law requires; bring proof of your old policy. How that works is in our switching guide.

What to check before you buy in-app

  1. The waiting period on your policy schedule. The market standard, and legal maximum, is six months for natural causes. Confirm the number in the policy document the app issues, especially for lives added later, since each newly added person starts their own waiting period.
  2. Per-life benefits. Dependants and extended family members typically carry lower maximum cover than the main member. The schedule, not the headline, is what pays.
  3. Entry ages for parents and extended family. Third-party summaries put Capitec's limits among the more generous in the market, with parents and extended family insurable to advanced ages, but these figures are not published clearly; confirm in the app for the specific person you want to cover, and compare with funeral cover for parents.
  4. The underwriting change, if you hold an old policy. Policies moved from Centriq Life to Capitec Life in November 2024. Your cover continued, but if your paperwork predates that, download a fresh policy schedule from the app so the family claims against the right insurer.
  5. Where the payout lands. Claims pay into a Capitec account. Decide now whose account that should be, and make sure that person is the beneficiary on the schedule.

How Capitec compares

Capitec's pitch is price and convenience: the lowest advertised entry premium in the mainstream market, the regulatory-maximum R100,000 ceiling, and a claims process that lives where your banking does. What it does not offer is the benefit engineering of the big insurers, such as grocery and education add-ons or bundled funeral services. If you want a clean cash policy at a sharp price and you already bank with Capitec, it belongs on your shortlist of three quotes; see the full method in best funeral cover in South Africa, and size the benefit from real funeral costs.

Frequently asked

How much does Capitec funeral cover cost?
Capitec's published information advertises funeral cover from R25 per month when taken out on the app, and from R40 per month in-branch, with the app consistently the cheaper channel. Those entry prices apply to minimal cover; the premium for your actual family and benefit amounts is quoted in the app before you commit.
Who underwrites Capitec funeral cover?
Policies are underwritten by Capitec Life Limited, a licensed life insurer and FSP 54090. Older policies were underwritten by Centriq Life, part of the Sanlam Group, before Capitec migrated them to Capitec Life in November 2024. Either way the policy is regulated insurance, not a bank savings product.
How fast does Capitec pay funeral claims?
Capitec's published claims information says claims are processed within about 4 hours once all documents are received, with the money paid into your Capitec account immediately after approval. Have certified copies of the death certificate and IDs ready; our claims guide lists the full document set.

Information is accurate to the best of our knowledge as of August 2026. Procedures, fees and regulations change - verify critical details with your funeral parlour, Home Affairs or the FSCA before acting on them.

Thinking about a policy?

Many parlours sell their own funeral plans. Before you sign anything - here or elsewhere - it's worth understanding waiting periods, cash vs service benefits, and the FSCA licence check that protects you from schemes that never pay.
